The Galaxy Needs You: Using Rey’s Journey from Star Wars to Cultivate Self-Acceptance and Self-Compassion in Gestalt Play Therapy

Part of the 2026 Geek Play Therapy Summit

Rey’s journey in the Star Wars universe— and its retelling in the illustrated book, The Galaxy Needs You — offers a meaningful metaphor for clients seeking a sense of belonging, courage, and a compassionate relationship with themselves.

This workshop invites clinicians to explore how Rey’s story mirrors the internal world of children, teens, and adults struggling with identity, self-worth, and emotional pain.

Presenter

Janet Nordine, MS, LMFT, RPT-S

Janet is trauma-informed and trained in EMDR, Gestalt Play Therapy, Synergetic Play Therapy, Playful EMDR, Level I Theraplay, and adoption-competent and compassionate practice. She is often joined in her office by her facility dog, Lexi, a gentle goldendoodle who offers quiet presence, comfort, and unconditional warmth to those she meets. Lexi’s steady companionship supports emotional safety, connection, and regulation—especially for children and individuals who find healing through relationship and nonverbal attunement. As one of the few Registered Play Therapist Supervisors in private practice in Nevada, Janet also provides clinical supervision and consultation to emerging therapists. She is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and faculty member with the West Coast Institute for Gestalt Play Therapy with Children and Adolescents. Her teaching and mentorship are shaped by both clinical rigor and lived experience, including her perspective as an adoptee. Janet is the founder of the Las Vegas Play Therapy Symposium and is deeply committed to advancing child-centered, developmentally attuned care in her community of Las Vegas, NV. She approaches therapy as a sacred responsibility—one that honors the past, tends carefully to the present, and gently supports the unfolding of a more connected and meaningful future.
